How to keep sweaters pill-free for winter

by Clendy S.p.A. 12 Jan 2024

As winter progresses, the use of wool garments increases, and most people wear sweaters and jumpers. Among the main problems that arise when using these garments is undoubtedly the formation of pilling, which are small balls of fabric that make the garment look unsightly and can give it a neglected appearance. But is it possible to remove pilling from sweaters?

The methods for removing pilling from wool sweaters are simple and, above all, DIY, making them easy to apply. One of the most well-known methods is based on applying adhesive tape, gently of course, to the fabric, capturing as many pills as possible until the used layer is no longer or only slightly adhesive. An alternative to tape can certainly be an adhesive label, which essentially has the same effectiveness.

Other DIY solutions can be a pumice stone, or velcro, and why not, even using nylon stockings can be effective for removing pilling. There are also electric solutions like fabric shavers, but not everyone likes this type of tool, also because they are not always cheap, so how can you make the pilling removal process more convenient?

Our suggestion is to use a lint brush, like our Lint Roller, which is an adhesive brush with a handle that is easy to apply to garments and easily removes pilling without damaging the fabrics. This tool can be a valuable ally as it is low-cost, can be used multiple times although it is a consumable product, and is certainly very effective.

Finally, but no less importantly, some small tips to prevent pilling from forming. Ideally, delicate sweaters should be hand-washed, specifically at 30°C, preferably using dedicated products or the famous Marseille soap. It is also advisable to keep them away from garments that encourage pilling to form.
